Our foundation is named in memory of a dedicated peace advocate, Marie Strain. Marie is the founder of Peace Day in Concord, Massachusetts and always hoped for a National Peace Day. On September 28th of 2007 Marie passed away, but left a lasting impact on countless lives.
On September 21st, 2004 The International Peace Day of Massachusetts took off in Concord, Massachusetts. Flags from all over the globe were flying in the middle of town representing a number of countries including the U.S.. At 12:00 noon church bells rang, some of them 21 times.
The Marie Strain International Peace Foundation, Inc. leader, Barbara Walker continues to advocate peace and was recognized with great honor from Gov. Mitt Romney for all of her peace work.
In 2009 the foundation officially became a 501 (c) (3) Non Profit. We are available to come to schools and other organizations to speak about International Peace and our foundation.
International Peace Day, 2013
“The theme for this day is education and peace. The United Nations will examine the role education can in fostering global citizenship.
It is not enough to tech children how to read, write and count. Education has to cultivate mutual respect for others and the world in which we live, and help people forge more just, inclusive and peaceful societies.
The kind of education is a central focus of my global education first initiative, which calls on governments to place education at the top of their agenda.
I call on everyone whether governments, parties to conflicts, religious institutions, community leaders, the media, academics, or civil society groups to play their part. We must support peace education programs, protect students and teachers from conflict, help rebuild schools destroyed by war, and ensure all girls and boys have access to a quality education that includes learning about resolving and preventing conflicts. Let us resolve to learn together how to create a universal culture of peace.
